Shazam Scam Calls & Text Messages How to recognize Shazam scam calls and text messages

We're seeing an uptick in scam calls and texts targeting our customers. Fraudsters are sending fake "fraud alert" texts asking you to verify a debit card transaction you didn't make, followed by a phone call requesting additional one-time passcodes and requesting that you authenticate additional transactions.

Neither Shazam nor Citizens Bank will EVER contact you and ask for your PIN, password, full card number, or one-time passcode by phone or text.

Here is an example of what a fraudulent text could look like:

Please do not respond to these text messages. If you reply, the fraudster may call you next, trying to "verify" the transaction. Their real goal is to get your full debit card number, expiration date, and CVC/CVV code.

If you get a call or text from someone claiming to be a SHAZAM representative, and they ask for your card number, a one-time passcode, or other sensitive information, hang up. We will never ask you for this information over text or phone. If you have questions, call E-Branch at 505-599-0100.

Your bank will never ask you for the following over text or phone:

Personal Identification Number (PIN)
We will never ask for your PIN by text or phone call. We have secure ways to verify your identity that don't involve asking for your PIN. If someone asks for it, that's a red flag — report it to us right away.

Full Social Security Number
We may ask for the last four digits of your Social Security number to verify your identity. We will never ask for the full number by text or phone. Sharing your full SSN over an unsecured call can put you at risk of identity theft and financial fraud. Always double-check who you're talking to before sharing any part of it.

Full Debit or Credit Card Number, Expiration Date, and CVC/CVV Code
We may ask for the last few digits of your card to confirm your identity. We will never ask for your full card number, expiration date, or CVC/CVV code. If someone claiming to be from your bank asks for all of this, it's a scam.

Account Passwords
We will never ask for your account password by text or phone call. Keep your password to yourself, and don't share it with anyone who contacts you this way. If someone asks, don't comply — report it to us.

One-Time Passcodes
We do use one-time passcodes to help keep your account secure, but we will never call or text you asking you to read one back to us. These codes are for your use only. Never share them, even with someone who claims to be from the bank.

Not sure if you're really talking to your bank?
Here are two easy ways to check:

• Hang up and call the number on the back of your card, or call your local branch directly.
• Visit your branch in person and ask.
